The Protagonists story begins right after the main character moves to the Alola region. After choosing to play as a hero or heroine, players can customize their character’s name and appearance. No sooner have they arrived than their adventures begin to unfold, and they meet many fascinating people as they travel through the region.
Appearance - Sun is shown to be wearing a black baseball cap with a white Poké Ball like symbol planted on the front, also having a blue brim. By default, he has neck length black hair and pale skin, with slate grey eyes and a smile on his face. He has a blue and white striped t-shirt, black and red cargo shorts that lead to blue and teal water shoes, wearing no socks underneath. He sports a gray Z-Ring on his left arm. His appearance is customizable, like that of Calem.
Appearance - Moon is shown to have a red toque (which has a flower-like top) sitting on her shorter black hair that surrounds her pale face. She has slate grey eyes like her male counterpart, but she shows her enthusiasm much more with a large smile. She has a loose light yellow t-shirt with light pink and goldenrod flora patterns spread across it, along with very small green shorts, and finally wearing red and black shoes with large yellow laces. She sports a gray Z-Ring on her left arm. Her appearance is customizable.
Changes appear in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon with a new outfit, consisting of a orange shirt with red flowers, white shorts, black and white shoes, her hair has braids and is shown to have a yellow porkpie hat with a flower. The male character has a blue vest, red hat, new shorts with under shorts, as well as red and white trainers. The male character can be seen wearing the new Z-Power Ring.
Appearance - Hau is a dark-skinned boy, with brown hair, which is tied into a short ponytail with an orange band. Hau wears a black shirt, some yellow boardshorts with orange and white flowers on them and orange shoes and backpack. Hau is mostly seen smiling and being cheerful.
Personality - Hau is a Pokémon-loving young boy with a big appetite. He's the same age as the player character. When moving to the Alola region, he makes friends with the player character right away. He has a real weakness for malasada, a famous treat in the Alola region, and he is always in search of malasada shops. He is a big-hearted boy, who really loves Pokémon. Though, this is because, when Hau was a young boy, he spotted Hala in a furious state, which scared him, to the point of even crying in fear. As Hala's actions couldn't comfort him, he decides to be "soft" with him.
Games - Hau is a boy who lives in Iki Town of Melemele Island. After the player (Sun or Moon) arrives in Alola, Hau quickly befriends him \ her and they become rivals. He battles the player several times across the Alola region.
Lillie also loves to read, and is always remembering things that she picked up from some book or another. She stays at the professors Pokémon Research Lab and helps Kukui conduct his important research around Melemele Island.
Appearance - Lillie is a young girl with green eyes and long light blond hair, with two braids at each side of her face. She wears a large white hat, with a blue ribbon around it. Lillie wears a white dress with transparent outlines, a pair of long socks and white shoes resembling ballet flats. She also carries a round bag with a Poké Ball design on both sides.
As later revealed, Lusamine made the choice of Lillie's dress for her, likely with the intent of resembling a Nihilego given her obsession with that species of Ultra Beast. After realizing her mother is too far gone to listen to reason, she changes her outfit to a white sailor-like shirt with a blue ribbon and a skirt with a light blue line. She stops wearing her hat, instead restyling her hair as a ponytail tied together with a braid. She also wears a pink backpack with a white ribbon and white penny loafers with white ankle socks.
Personality - Lillie is a mysterious girl who assists the professor for personal reasons. She's not fond of making Pokémon fight in battles, but she loves reading and has devoured many books. Lillie was revealed to have taken a Cosmog from her mother, and along with Kukui and Burnet are studying the Cosmog and its secrets. Lillie will play an important role in the story of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.
Lillie loves to shop and read books. When she is traveling with the player character, she is usually exclaiming to do some shopping of her own, and in cities would tell the player character that she got lost and ended up buying outfits in a shop. Lillie is always getting lost, and the player character has to help her. This happens usually because Lillie is trying to avoid Team Skull grunts, as she is not a trainer, and ended up going in the wrong directions trying to get away from them.
Lillie originally had a close relationship with her mother, as she mentioned sleeping in Lusamine's bed as a child. However, over time, Lusamine started becoming insane, and grew even madder when Gladion escaped Aether Foundation two years before the story begins. She became unbearable to Lillie, so she left as well. When the player character and Lillie meet Lusamine in Ultra Space, she gets the courage to yell at Lusamine for being terrible for trying to control her and stating that "children are not just things that belong to their parents". After Lusamine gets separated from Nihilego, she regains some of her sanity back and touches Lillie's cheek. Lillie eventually decides to travel to Kanto to find Bill so that he may give her the cure for Nihilego's poison. Lillie also decides to go to Kanto to become a true Pokemon Trainer so that she may earn badges and meet and catch lots of wonderful Pokemon.
